Local governments play a key role in the planning system, driving locally-led solutions to meet the needs and expectations of local communities. The role and voice of local government is vital in delivering not only productivity, but liveability and sustainability.

Exclusively for LGNSW members, this year’s event - Planning in NSW: responding in uncertain times - local government’s role in shaping communities – provides an opportunity to hear from Kiersten Fishburn, Coordinator General Planning Delivery Unit (PDU) and Local Government at the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) about the need for reform, the challenges and opportunities presented by the pandemic and the critical role the planning system can play in the state’s economic and social recovery. Kiersten commenced with DPIE in July 2020, and prior to her appointment was the CEO of Liverpool City Council. Kiersten will also speak about the PDU and how they work closely with stakeholders and government agencies to remove blockages and resolve issues on projects in the planning system, and assist with projects under assessment, so that decisions can be made more quickly.

Attendees will also hear from Julian Szafraniec, an urban economist who is a Partner and Principal at SGS Economics & Planning and key advisor to the government. Julian will share his expertise about changes in the economy and social norms, tracking pre-COVID-19 patterns, patterns experienced during COVID-19 and envisaged changes post COVID-19 and offer his insights about the implications for local government and future planning for NSW.
