Mercury Vapour Lamps

The Australian Government is seeking to ratify the Minamata Convention on Mercury.

The Convention prohibits the import, export and manufacture of High Pressure Mercury Vapour (HPMV) lamps, as of December 2020.

This means that Australia will need to stop importation of HPMVs from the time that the Convention enters into force for Australia. On the current ratification timeframes, this is expected in the first quarter of 2022. The ban is on import, export and manufacture of HPMVs, and does not affect ongoing use of these lamps (until domestic supplies run out).

Councils are advised to transition council-owned HPMV street lights and path lighting to LEDs or other lamps.
