LGNSW Service Awards

LGNSW grants four awards for elected members:

  • Certificate of Service
  • Emeritus Mayor
  • Elected Official of the Year
  • Lifetime Achievement Award

The Awards are presented at the LGNSW Annual Conference, or other significant LGNSW events.

Certificate of Service

A Certificate of Service acknowledges the duration of service of an elected member.

Eligibility

  • Eligibility is based on years of service (either 10 years; 15 years; 20 years; or 25 years).
  • Service is not required to be consecutive.
  • Applications must provide details of years of service and the council(s) at which the nominee served.
  • Any nominee who has had a period of suspension from elected office will be ineligible for the Award.
  • Recipients are to be nominated by the General Manager of the current council at which they serve. 

Award Description
Recipients who have served 10 or 15 years will be presented a framed certificate.

Recipients who have served 20 or 25 years will be presented a framed certificate and a medal featuring LGNSW’s logo with the recipient’s name and the applicable years of service engraved on the reverse side.

Emeritus Mayor

The Emeritus Mayor award acknowledges the service of retired councillors who served as mayors.

Eligibility

  • Recipients must have served a minimum of five years as a mayor.
  • Service is not required to be consecutive.
  • Applications must provide details of years of service and the council(s) at which the nominee served.
  • Any nominee who has had a period of suspension from elected office will be ineligible for the award.
  • The title cannot be used while in office.
  • LGNSW has discretion to withhold or withdraw the conferral of the Emeritus Mayor award if a proposed recipient/recipient engages in behaviour that is likely to (or does) discredit the local government sector.
  • Recipients are to be nominated by the general manager of the council at which they served.

Elected Official of the Year

The Elected Official of the Year Award recognises and rewards innovation and service as it occurs.

Eligibility

  • Eligibility is restricted to serving councillors and mayor
  • The recipient of the award will have instigated significant change or innovation in the previous 12 months that has benefited the community that they serve or the local government sector.

Award Description
In recognition of the prestigious nature of the Award and the likelihood that it will not be awarded on an annual basis, an appropriate award will be designed to honour the recipient of each award.


Lifetime Achievement Award

The Lifetime Achievement Award acknowledges an exceptional contribution made to the community that an elected official represents or the local government sector.

Eligibility 

  • Eligibility is restricted to serving and retired councillors and mayors. Posthumous nominations will not be considered.
  • The Award may be awarded only once to each recipient.
  • Whilst tenure is not a determinant judged by the evaluation panel, nominees must have served as a councillor or mayor for a minimum of two terms to be eligible to nominate.
  • Any nominee who has had a period of suspension from elected office will be ineligible for the Award.
  • Current members of the LGNSW Board will be ineligible for the Award.
  • A nominee’s contribution must be evidenced through the provision of information and examples or service or leadership in the community, innovation, and advancement of policy or legislative change.
  • Nominees should note that given the prestige of the award, LGNSW may invite recipients to speak at significant events or conferences.
