Asbestos Management

Winner Division C and Overall Category Winner

Penrith City Council - Asbestos management framework project
The asbestos management framework project is a ‘whole of Council’ approach which developed in-house asbestos training, an asbestos communication strategy, introduced a ‘smart’ reporting platform that links the online Asbestos Management Register to work orders, improved procedures to address a wide range of asbestos related incidents and the creation of the asbestos management team. The results from the project have been highly encouraging with increasing awareness of asbestos amongst staff and improved responses to asbestos matters.

Winner Division B

Bega Valley Shire Council - Managing asbestos for the Reedy Swamp, Vimy Ridge and Tathra fire
On 18 March 2018, fire destroyed around 70 homes in the small coastal and hinterland communities of Reedy Swamp, Vimy Ridge and Tathra and damaged many more. Many of these homes contained asbestos, creating risks that needed to be managed sensitively and efficiently alongside managing high levels of community devastation, trauma and loss. Council formulated an asbestos management program quickly, and formed a team to guide waste disposal, including asbestos waste, that included co-ordination with NSW agencies to address health and safety, environmental factors and community expectations.

Highly Commended Division C

Liverpool City Council - Asbestos and waste management system
Liverpool City Council’s commitment to implement a 'best practice' management system has resulted in the introduction of procedures for staff on managing all asbestos waste encountered by Council, a tracking system for all asbestos waste that is found and disposed by Council and increased the level of awareness across Council in managing asbestos, waste, and environmental matters.
