Participants will examine the fundaments of planning theory and practice, the current statutory framework (and proposed changes) and the role of Local Government, and councillors in particular, in planning matters.

Who should attend?
Councillors and senior staff.

What it will cover
Local Government planning functions are complex and often give rise to controversial debates over the development of sites, precincts and suburbs. 

This course will cover councils’ current role in plan making and development assessment, as well as discuss the implications of review process on Local Government.

Content

  • Understand and discuss the breadth of legislative planning and environmental responsibilities carried out by Local Government;
  • Understand the strategic planning and development assessment role of councils;
  • Develop an understanding through an overview of the Green Paper
  • Understanding of the review of the NSW Planning System;
  • Understanding of local community engagement in the plan making process;  
  • Understanding the councillor’s role in planning matters at a local level.

Process
The workshop uses an interactive approach including group discussion, individual writing exercises and a small group proposal writing project.

Participants are encouraged to bring in samples of their work, or a current project, to receive individual guidance and feedback during the workshop.
