The Legal Officer role offers an exciting opportunity to undertake research and provide high-level, expert advice to the Association and its members (councils, county councils and related local government bodies) on a broad range of legal issues, case law and legislation affecting local government.

About LGNSW
Local Government NSW (LGNSW) is the peak body for councils and related organisations in NSW. LGNSW advocates on behalf of its members and their communities on policy to decision-makers at state and federal levels. We also provide a comprehensive range of services including workplace relations' representation, management services, training, and legal support.

About the role
Reporting to the Director Workforce and Legal, the Legal Officer will play an integral role in providing high-level internal legal advice to LGNSW, and general legal advice to members on a broad range of legal issues, case law and legislation affecting local government, including the Local Government Act and Regulations, Planning and Environment Law, Property Law, Contract Law, Code of Conduct issues and complaints, council meetings and procedures, and privacy and access to information.

The role also participates in various projects, such as contributing to reviews into the NSW Councillor Conduct Framework, and proposed amendments to local government related legislation.

About you
You will be an Australian legal practitioner (solicitor or barrister) with demonstrated experience researching legislation and case law and in providing high level written and verbal advice to clients. 

Essential Requirements

  • Tertiary qualifications in law, and current practicing certificate as an Australian legal practitioner (solicitor or barrister)
  • Experience in interpreting legislation and case law
  • Well-developed oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated research skills, including online research
  • General knowledge of local government practices and policies
  • Knowledge of office-based computer packages
  • Class C driver's licence (or equivalent).

Previous experience providing high-level legal advice on issues relating to local government and experience in drafting/reviewing contracts and other legal documents would be highly regarded.
