Greening our City Grants

2022

After the success of the 2020 and 2021 funding rounds, 17 councils in Sydney were funded for an additional 21 tree planting projects.

The 2022 program grants a total of over $9.9 million for projects running until 2025, to enhance urban tree canopy and green cover.

Examples of 2022 projects include:

  • Park and street tree planting with complementary native woody meadow establishment (Bayside Council, Cumberland City Council)
  • Greening of active travel routes to schools (Penrith City Council, Willoughby City Council)
  • Micro-forest carbon sinks (Camden Council)

2021

Following previous funding rounds, the 2021 Greening our City grant program supported 23 Greater Sydney councils to enhance urban tree canopy and green cover.

The 2021 program funded an additional 28 tree planting projects, with a total value of over $9.9 million.

Examples of projects funded in the 2021 grant program:

  • Street tree planting (City of Canterbury Bankstown, Waverley Council, Strathfield Council, City of Canada Bay, Hornsby Shire Council, Cumberland City Council)
  • Plantings increasing shade along the Great West Walk in Jordan Springs (Penrith City Council)
  • The greening of rail corridors (Blacktown City Council)

2020

The 2020 Greening our City program funded projects within Greater Sydney under two grant streams:

  • Stream 1 - Cooler Suburbs: up to $10 million was available to councils for tree planting projects in streets, parks and other areas with low canopy coverage
  • Stream 2 - Green Innovations: up to $2.5 million was available to councils and partners for demonstration projects that enhance, protect and showcase urban greening

Thirty-one councils and organisations were awarded grants across 50 projects:

  • Stream 1 - 38 projects received a total of $8,074,305
  • Stream 2 - 12 projects received a total of $2,126,445

Examples of projects funded in the 2020 Greening our City grant program:

Stream 1

  • Mature trees planted as part of large town centre upgrades in Windsor, South Windsor and Richmond (Hawkesbury City Council)
  • Greening the Cooks to Cove Greenway pedestrian and cycle path (Inner West Council)
  • Tree planting to bring much needed shade to a new Box Hill park (The Hills Shire Council)

Stream 2

  • Connecting vulnerable populations of White Gums (Camden Council)
  • Exploring heat tolerance of native and exotic plant species (Hawkesbury City Council in conjunction with Western Sydney University)
  • A living hoarding to reduce the impacts of construction during the upgrade of Soper Place (Penrith City Council in conjunction with University of Technology Sydney and Western Sydney University)
