Statewide Mutual: A pillar of support for New South Wales councils

For over 30 years, Statewide Mutual has been a cornerstone of stability and support for councils across New South Wales. It was founded in 1993 when skyrocketing insurance premiums and dwindling coverage options threatened local governments.

With underwriters withdrawing their support and claims spiralling out of control, several councils united to take action. They realised that by pooling their resources, they could mitigate individual risks – and secure ongoing protection for their local communities.

And so, Statewide Mutual was born: a unified, member-run organisation that could offer reliable coverage and long-term support. And that’s exactly what we’ve been doing for the past 30 years. What started as a collaborative effort between 9 councils has now grown into something much bigger. Today, at 113 councils strong, we are Australia’s largest member-owned local government mutual. But though our membership has grown, our mission has remained the same.

We’re created by councils, for councils. We continually adapt our services to meet local governments' evolving needs. And we foster meaningful, long-lasting relationships with our members based on transparency, integrity and trust.

Because we believe that together, we are stronger.
