Asparagus fern - considered a weed.

Nominate a nationally significant weed

The National Established Weed Priorities (NEWP) is a collaborative initiative to determine and address weed priorities through nationally coordinated action.

NEWP’s objective is to reduce the further spread and impacts of established weeds across Australia.

Weeds have a major impact on Australia’s agricultural productivity, costing more than $4.3 billion each year. They also adversely impact upon our natural environment, cultural values, human health and community spaces. Working together we can reduce the impacts of weeds on our farms, forests, cultural values and threatened species.

Government and non-government organisations are invited to nominate a nationally significant weed. The EOI period is open until 9pm (AEST) on 20 September 2024.

Ensure that you understand the nomination process described in the Guide to nominating a nationally significant weed.

The EOI is the first step and the weed must meet eligibility criteria. To meet the eligibility criteria, the weed must:

  • be a single species or small group of closely related species that are similar in life-form and management requirements
  • not be native to Australia
  • not be under national eradication
  • be established in at least one state or territory.

Previous weed nominations, such as through the Weed Biocontrol or Weed Scan projects, will not be considered for this process. An EOI is needed for NEWP consideration.
