Disaster Ready Fund

The Australian Government has announced up to $1 billion will be committed through the Disaster Ready Fund (DRF) over five years, from 1 July 2023 to 30 June 2028.

Each financial year, up to $200 million will be made available to states and territories.

Funding will be available to invest in mitigation infrastructure projects such as flood levees and fire breaks, as well as systemic disaster risk reduction projects such as hazard mapping, land use planning and governance projects and projects that incentivise private investment.

The funding is provided to State and territory governments by the Australian Government.  Under the Australian Government guidelines, the NSW Reconstruction Authority is the Applicant and is coordinating project proposals on behalf of New South Wales.

State agencies, councils, Joint Organisations (JOs), Aboriginal Land Councils and other bodies are eligible to submit proposals to the NSW Reconstruction Authority. Information sessions were held for councils in late January and proposals for Round 1 are to be submitted by 14 February 2023.

Further information

LGNSW is concerned that the short notice and the dollar-for-dollar co-contribution requirements will cause difficulties for councils intending to submit funding proposals for Round 1.

LGNSW would appreciate comments from councils on the operation of the DRF and the assistance provided by the NSW Reconstruction Authority,
