Funding Challenges and Opportunities Survey

Rural Councils Victoria (Australia) has engaged consulting firm SGS Economics and Planning to explore the specific funding challenges facing rural councils in Victoria, and to identify potential alternative income sources.

To inform this work, SGS is asking local governments across Australia (metro, rural and regional) to share examples of own-source income options (beyond rating, fines, fees, grants and contributions). These could be options in use or that you have identified as opportunities.

Examples of alternative own-source income streams include are (but are not limited to) commercial rental investment, carbon offsets, sponsorship, and/or commercial partnerships.

While for some councils these income streams may be well established and seen as standard practice, many mechanisms beyond rating, fines, contributions and grants will be innovative when considered by others.
