How AI is Revolutionising Road Maintenance

The NSW Government has announced an exciting new trial in which buses and garbage trucks equipped with Artificial Intelligence (AI) will track and prioritise road repairs, including identifying potholes before they form.

A $2.9 million trial led by Asset AI™ involves 32 sensors installed on 32 public transport buses across Greater Sydney area – which is being led by Transport for NSW and the Roads and Transport Directorate (a joint venture with LGNSW).

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway MP confirmed that road data is also being collected from a utility vehicle mounted with cameras scanning 100km of rural roads across regional NSW.

The technology will fast track councils’ ability to assess their road assets and create several economic and public amenity benefits. The technology is expected to be available to all NSW Local Government areas in late 2023.
