Cemeteries consultation – Proposed interment industry scheme

Cemeteries & Crematoria NSW (CCNSW) is seeking feedback on a draft licensing scheme that is intended to strengthen regulation of cemeteries and crematoria in NSW.

The proposed scheme will consist of a licensing scheme for all cemetery and crematoria operators, introducing a series of licence conditions. The requirements will apply with varying extent to different categories of licensed operator, proportionate to the level of risk represented by a particular operator.

Council-run cemeteries undertake half of the burials in NSW. The proposed reforms would have a significant impact on the operation of all cemeteries, including those operated by local government. CCNSW advises it is investigating opportunities to streamline regulations for council operators in recognition of their existing regulatory environment.

Consultation materials, including a discussion paper and the draft licensing scheme, are available online.

LGNSW will prepare a submission to the consultation, building on our ongoing advocacy on this matter. To provide feedback for inclusion in LGNSW’s submission, or for further information, please email Damian Thomas. LGNSW Strategy Manager, by 7 December.

Feedback directly to CCNSW is due by 14 December.
