Showground funding welcomed but councils need more

Local Government NSW has welcomed the State Government’s announcement to provide extra funding for council-run showgrounds across state’s rural and regional areas.

LGNSW President Linda Scott said the maintenance funding package would benefit councils by improving showground facilities as well as creating and maintaining much-needed jobs.

“This funding will enable councils to keep people in work and businesses in business,” Cr Scott said.

“Showgrounds are usually Crown Lands managed by councils. They are the heart and soul of many rural and regional communities because they bring people together for events that boost local economies.

“We look forward to the return of local shows, markets, trade shows to our improved regional showgrounds once COVID-19 Public Health Orders are lifted.”

Cr Scott said other important council-run facilities such as community centres, and arts and cultural buildings, needed increased support from State and Federal governments in this time of crisis.

“Communities need stimulus funding for projects to help sustain council operations, which are already depleted by drought and fires, and to keep jobs and lift local economies,” Cr Scott said.

"This could be achieved by increasing or bringing forward funding under existing funding programs or introducing new programs.”

“Our communities know very well that it’s their local councils that are best placed to deliver locally led solutions, including recovery efforts and economic stimulus – as demonstrated during bushfires, drought and floods.

“Strong local government, supported by substantial funding and resources, is key to continued local employment and support for local businesses, as well as ongoing investment in public infrastructure and community services for the public good.”
