In 2017, Local Government NSW commissioned research into community perceptions of local government.

The research involved residents from 128 local government areas throughout NSW, and presented valuable findings on attitudes towards local councils, satisfaction levels and community benefits.

Seventy-five per cent (75%) of surveyed respondents said that local government (not state or federal) is the best sphere of government to make decisions about their local area.

This closely correlated with the perceived benefits of local government, with the most common answer being ‘knowledge/understanding of the local community’.

What’s more, 82% of respondents expressed a degree of satisfaction with local government, ranging from ‘somewhat satisfied’ to ‘very satisfied’.

Overall, the research presented a largely positive perception of local government, and served to reinforce the importance and value of councils to their local communities.
