LGNSW Councillor election training

LGNSW is offering a range of programs for pre and post Local Government elections.

Amendments to the Local Government Act 1993 in August 2016 included the addition in the prescribed role of councillors under Section 232 of a responsibility “to make all reasonable efforts to acquire and maintain the skills necessary to perform the role of councillors”. 

In support of this, regulations have been made requiring councils to provide induction training and ongoing professional development for mayors and councillors.

The Office of Local Government issued guidelines under 23A of the Act to assist councils to develop and deliver induction training and ongoing professional development for their mayors and councillors in compliance with the regulations.

To assist councils, LGNSW has developed a range of pre-election candidate sessions, induction programs and professional development programs.

Pre-election training

• Pre-election Candidate Information Session(s) (member requested) – 2.5 to 3-hour workshop

Post election training

• Elected Life: Newly Elected Members – one-day workshop
• Elected Life: Newly elected members – two-day workshop
• Elected Life (Refresher): Returning elected members – one-day workshop
