Media release: Councils arrive at annual Local Government NSW conference

Councillors and general managers from NSW councils and county councils will gather together in Sydney today to debate the future direction of the local government sector.

LGNSW President Keith Rhoades said the annual LGNSW conference, which kicks off at the Hyatt Regency hotel this morning, will cover hot-button topics such as planning reform, the container deposit scheme, prevention of violence towards women and children and issues relating to economic development of Aboriginal lands.

Delegates will also debate motions relating to infrastructure and planning policy; the risks involved in private certification; and Independent Hearing and Assessment Panels (IHAPs).

“Planning reform and the imposition of mandatory planning panels for metropolitan councils are key issues for the local government sector so it is no surprise that of the 89 motions to be debated, IHAPS are amongst the first motions for discussion,” Clr Rhoades said.

“We cannot deliver the right results for the community if we have to work with one hand tied behind our backs.

“The local government sector is ready to play its part in delivering the infrastructure and services our communities need but the two spheres of government must work in partnership if we are to meet the challenges before us.”

Conference delegates will be addressed by Acting Premier John Barilaro; Minister for Local Government Gabrielle Upton; Roads, Maritime and Freight Minister Melinda Pavey and the Shadow Minister for Local Government Peter Primrose.

Also on the program are presentations from Walkley Award winning journalist Annabel Crabb and Dr Jonathan Carr-West, Chief Executive, Local Government Information Unit UK, who will present a keynote address on transforming local government.

Council delegates will also elect an 18-strong LGNSW Board, including a new President and Treasurer, new Metro and Regional Vice Presidents, and 14 new Directors (7 Metro-Urban and 7 Rural-Regional).

The Conference will run until 6 December.
