Media Release: New Resource with Supports for Aboriginal Peoples to Run in Local Elections

17 July 2017

Collaborate NSW, an online resource designed to encourage the inclusion of Aboriginal communities in local council decision-making, service development and delivery, has been launched by Local Government NSW.

The website includes a section devoted to promoting greater representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples on local councils.

LGNSW President Keith Rhoades said Collaborate NSW aims to foster inclusion and help boost the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander local government councillors so it better aligns with the 2.5 per cent of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the NSW population.

“We need to accurately reflect the diversity of our community in local government and, in turn, unlock the important cultural, social and economic contributions Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities have to offer,” said Cr Rhoades.

The candidate support section of Collaborate NSW includes information for potential candidates to consider in order to make an informed decision about standing for election.

The site also steps out the process required to nominate and includes campaign tips and useful information on working with local media, advertising and how-to-vote cards, and important campaign finance rules.

There are also links to training opportunities and other support resources.

All of the website material can be viewed online or easily downloaded in a printable format.

“There are significant benefits for the community in terms of the delivery of services, infrastructure and programs, when there is greater participation and representation of Aboriginal peoples,” Cr Rhoades said.

NSW council elections are being held for 46 NSW councils on 9 September with nominations open only for a short time (31 July – midday 9 August 2017).

“The opportunity for Aboriginal peoples to stand and be a voice is available with the upcoming elections. It’s time to have a say,” said Cr Rhoades.

Local Government NSW developed Collaborate NSW in consultation with key stakeholders and with funding support from the Office of Local Government.
