Local Government Week focuses on Your Council

Councils across NSW are gearing up for Local Government Week and Local Government NSW (LGNSW) is encouraging communities to get involved.

Local Government Week starts on Monday 29 July and runs until Sunday 4 August.

LGNSW President Linda Scott said councils were always striving to provide services that were beneficial for their individual communities, so it was important for residents to know the expertise their council offers.

“From open green space and sustainability, to managing water, childcare centres, parks and sporting fields, roads and bicycle paths, citizenship ceremonies to fire safety checks to pet registration – local governments are embedded in people’s lives for the public good,” Cr Scott said.

“Local Government Week provides the perfect opportunity to promote the importance of councils to residents, ratepayers, businesses – the whole community.’

This year’s theme is Your Council and councils across the state are joining in, with special events, tours, open days and more.

Some examples of activities planned for next week include:

  • Tweed Shire Council is offering locals the opportunity to learn more about what happens to your recycling once it’s been collected, with guided tours of the Tweed Materials Recycling Facility.
  • Locals in the Parramatta City Council area can discover more about current and future developments in one of NSW’S fastest growing council areas, with walking tours of the city.
  • Griffith City Council has activities for young and old including free classes at the aquatic centre, the tri-sports challenge for local schools, and a thank you lunch for council volunteers.

There are dozens of other activities across NSW this Local Government Week and Cr Scott is encouraging councils and communities to celebrate what makes the place they call home so special.

“Local councils are right at the heart of their communities in so many ways,’ she said. ‘Whether you live in a metropolitan, regional or rural area this is the perfect week to join in and get to know Your Council.”
